                        Wolfsbane: Part Seven

Of course, the entire household was in an uproar once the other wolves found out Gilbert had at last awakened.

Elizabeta was the first to find out. Probably because she had heard your threat about hitting Gilbert over the head with the frying pan—that woman sure loved her skillets. (This was a lie, you knew it was because the pack was all connected, so of course they would be able to feel when Gilbert had woken up.) She had immediately rushed into the bedroom, face flushed and green eyes bright with relief. And maybe a few tears, though she would never admit it.

Lily and Vash were next. The siblings both raced in, looking relieved and like a million burdens have lifted off of their slender shoulders. Then came Roderich and Vladimir—both had a thankful and free from anxiety expression plastered on their faces, the shadows under their eyes seeming to disappear within moments.

Finally, Ludwig entered.

Gilbert and his younger brother both stared at one another in the eye, crimson meeting icy blue. The blonde German's face was stiff as usual, his emotions hidden beneath his steely exterior. But as soon as Gilbert gave him a toothy grin and proclaimed in a teasing, haughty tone, "Kesesesese, Luddy, (name) made me all better and you couldn't do anything~ You're a sucky Beta, you know that?" Ludwig's cold armor dissolved into relief.
And then he promptly smacked his older brother across the snout.

"OW! THE FUCK WAS THAT FOR, BRUDER?!"

"Since you're obviously feeling good enough to insult me, I figured it wouldn't cause too much harm to you."

You, having stayed silent and respectful during the entire exchange as each member of Gilbert's pack expressed their happiness that he was all right, let out a little snort of laughter, earning yourself a small smile from Ludwig and an eyetwitch from Gilbert. Holding your hands up innocently as the rest of the pack held back their own laughs, you said, "He has a point, Gilbert. And you know it's kind of amusing, the way we always smack you around. Who's the Alpha wolf here?"

"I am of course!" He snorted indignantly, wolfish features contorted in a childish pout as he whined and placed his furry head in your lap, looking up at you with hurt red eyes. "(Name)…be nicer to me…I just woke up from a coma…"

And for some reason, the way his eyes bore into yours made your heart beat just a few beats faster.

Blushing slightly, you averted your eyes from his and muttered, "Sorry, sorry…"

Roderich cleared his throat in a distinguished manner. "Ahem. Miss (name), you were the only one here when Gilbert awoke. Do you know how or why he did?"

"Because by my calculations, nothing said he was going to be up and at 'em for awhile," Vladimir added with a small pout, crossing his arms. Apparently he was a little annoyed that all his "magic knowledge" hadn't helped the pack in this specific endeavor.

As the pack looked to you with curious, eager eyes, you realized you didn't really have a concise answer. And a part of you was whispering that it wasn't a good idea to tell them about your little rendezvous with Natalia Braginski in that dream world—they would most likely worry too much. No, that was something only for Gilbert's ears. As was the whole "going to Prussia" bit. Some kind of natural instinct was just screaming at you that the rest of the wolves did not need to know.

So you just shrugged and said, "I don't really know. I was kind of asleep, and next thing I know Gilbert was waking up. That's it." You really hoped that with their keen sense of smell, they didn't have the ability to smell the lie on you.

Vash narrowed his eyes, but it wasn't in suspicion—or so you thought. It was more in angry curiosity. "Well, now that Gilbert is all better, the question remains…why did those Casters attack us? And why do they want (name)?"

You stiffened at the Swiss wolf's inquiry. You had pushed the thought back since so much had happened, but now it was brought up to the front of your mind. As long as you were here, the pack was probably in danger. But why? Why did those Casters want you so badly? Natalia hadn't had a clue about that whole fiasco, and you weren't too sure if that was a relief or not.

Lily and Elizebeta noticed your sudden silence, and they both frowned. The Hungarian woman and the younger girl both placed their hands on your shoulders comfortingly. "Don't worry, (name), you'll be safe here with us," Liz said solemnly. Lily nodded in agreement, giving you a small smile. You gave a shaky smile back, though you were not all too convinced if that statement could be kept true or not.

You just had a feeling that something wicked was coming this way.

"Anyway, I have to talk to (name) now, so you all should go because it has to be private," Gilbert interrupted, leaning against your side a bit and causing quick shocks of warmth to spread throughout your body. Your face flushed as the desire to do nothing but cuddle against that deliciously warm and soft white fur and sleep for about three days welled up inside you. You bit back a squeak, trying to act like everything was normal.

Just why were you feeling like such a confused teenager around Gilbert now?!

Maybe…was it…because of what Natalia had said? About how…love was a part of the cure for his canine curse too? And that it had to be his lifemate who saved him, not…you. Some other girl, with gorgeous looks and amazing talent and wisdom beyond reckoning. Not you with your plain face, boring (h/c) hair, and unappealing (e/c) eyes.

A warm, wet nose burrowing its way against your arm jolted you out of your thoughts, and you looked down to meet Gilbert's concerned scarlet gaze. "(Name)? Are you all right? There's something you aren't telling me, isn't there?" He said quietly, sitting up on his haunches so he was the same height as you, being you were sitting up on the bed as well.

You bit your lip guiltily. You just knew you couldn't keep this from him. Looking back down, you mumbled, "I met Natalia Braginski in my dream just now. And I think because of that…you woke up."

"…was…?" His tone was beyond shocked, and you didn't have to look at him to know his canine features were contorted with rage that he was trying desperately to hold back. "You met…NATALIA…in your dreams?"

You nodded slowly. "Y-Yeah. And she…told me some things. A lot of things. …Gilbert…you lied to me." He stiffened beside you but kept silent as you continued to speak. "Why didn't you tell me about the third component to the cure? That the girl has to be in love with you? I'm not really mad, I'm just…hurt. That you didn't tell me. Because didn't I promise to help you? I can't help you if you don't tell me everything I need to know. So just…why, Gilbert? Why?"

The albino wolf beside you was silent. He took a deep breath, shifting a bit, and spoke in a soft undertone. "I didn't tell you…because the awesome me was scared. Scared that if I told you, you would back down and not help me. Und I…" He swallowed, voice so full of remorse and regret that you just had to look down at him. "Und I'm scared that something will happen if I don't get out of this body soon. I mean, I AM a wolf Shifter. I love being a wolf. But…I love my human self too. Und if I don't get that back soon…what will happen? I'm…scared…"

He laughed, a bitter, scoffing sound. "The awesome Gilbert Beilschmidt doesn't have very many weaknesses, Schatz. But having something happen to me so I can't protect my pack anymore? That, my dear (name), is at the very top of the list."

Now it was your turn to feel guilty. If Gilbert didn't get this curse cured soon…he would turn into a wolf. A TRUE wolf, with no humanity left in him at all. And most likely, he would be able to sense the human halves of his pack, and run off to find wolves that were pure animal to be with. That…would mean he wouldn't be able to protect his pack anymore. And it would be your fault.

But how could you tell him that?

Sighing, you placed your hand on Gilbert's furry head and scratched his ears comfortingly. "…I'm sorry, Gil. I understand. I was just…a bit shocked, is all. But I understand—you want to get rid of this curse and continue protecting your pack. From what I can see…you've already done a really good job of it." You smiled softly down at him, rubbing his ears. "Ludwig, Liz, Lilly, Roderich, Vash, Vlad…they all love you, Gilbert. I can see it. And they're willing to do anything to help you. As am I."

Taking a deep breath, you pulling Gilbert's head into your lap a bit and hugged it gently, taking his instant stiffening that slowly melted into compliancy as he leaned against you as a good thing. "Natalia told me that if we went to Prussia—just the two of us—we would find something. Maybe I'm not the one who can help you, but I want to still try."

"Prussia…?" Gilbert mumbled, voice thick with astonishment. "But that's…that's where I was born!"

You nodded, hugging him tightly. You couldn't really understand why, but being with him like this…made you feel happy. Secure. Content. Safe. "Yeah, that's why we have to go, I think. Natalia didn't tell me much else, but…Gil…she also said that," you swallowed down the thick lump in your throat, figuring you would have to say this much, even though you really didn't want to, "that the one who is supposed to break this curse…has to be your lifemate."

"WAS?!" Gilbert barked, pulling away from you with a jerk and startling you a bit, causing you to fall back with a squeak. "My LIFEMATE?!"

He loomed over you, crimson eyes bright with something you couldn't describe. The close proximity of your bodies was making your face heat up yet again, and his paw was resting on a certain area you did not exactly appreciate. Read: he was stepping on your boob at the moment and didn't even seem to notice. "(Name), are you sure Natalia said lifemate? Are you? Are you are you are you are you are—"

"Yes, I'm sure!" You exploded in exasperation, giving him a glower and pushing him off of you before you face exploded. "She said lifemate, dammit!"

Gilbert grinned toothily, body wriggling with canine joy. "Kesesesesese~ That bitch doesn't know a thing, does she? I've already found my lifemate~ Und I'm sure she'll fix me. So I have nothing to worry about!"

You gaped at him.

He had…already found his lifemate?

But…who was…

Realization hit you like a train.

…oh.

There was only one possibility.

Elizabeta.

It made sense, when you thought about it. They were both strong Shifters, and despite the love-hate relationship they seemed to show off, it was obvious they were both close. And, as much as the jealous green serpent inside you hated to admit, they looked good together. She was absolute stunning and smart—he was a strong Alpha, and pretty damn handsome in all the pictures where he was still a human.

But just…why did you feel so envious? You loved Liz—she was pretty much your best friend now. You cared for Gilbert despite his narcissism—you couldn't exactly pinpoint just what he was to you, but you knew it was a lot.  And if she and Gilbert were lifemates, well, then kudos for them. It was probably the best match, really.

But…wait…didn't Natalia also say that…the one who fixes Gilbert's curse has to be a normal human girl? Or was she just lying?

"…who is it?" You asked quietly, trying your hardest to keep your tone from being anywhere near bitter. "Who's your lifemate? Natalia said that wolf Shifters haven't found their lifemates for a long time."

Gilbert just continued to grin at you, tail thumping against the bed in his ecstatic joy. "It's a secret~ She doesn't even know she's my lifemate yet! But I figured it out myself, and I'm just waiting for the best moment to tell her. It'll be awesome, I just know it! I can't wait until she finds out!"

You gave him a shaky smile, forcing the stinging hotness in your eyes to go away. "Th-that's great, Gil. I'm glad for you. I hope that whoever she is, you both will be really happy."

He cocked his head then, noticing your sudden change in attitude. "…(Name)? Are you…all right?" He leaned up and licked your cheek gently, his canine kiss seeming to linger just a second longer than usual on your cheek before pulling away. Normally the action would either send you into embarrassed sputtering, or make you giggle and cuddle him—it depended on your mood.

But now, it just made the little ball of misery grow, that serpent of envy swallowing it up in large, fanged jaws.

"…yeah. Just…tired. Worrying about you takes a lot out of me. I haven't really gotten any sleep lately, and when I did I was interrupted by Natalia. So I'm tired." You lay back down on the bed, facing the wall and not him. If you were going to start crying, you didn't want him to see it. Because now you knew why you were so affected by Gilbert's proclamation of already finding his lifemate.

Because somehow, some way, you were falling in love with the bastard.

Gilbert made a noise like a concerned whine in the back of his throat, but he settled against you, his furry back pressing against yours as he pulled the covers over you with his teeth. "…ja, all right. Go to sleep then. I'll be watching over you this time around. Sound gut?"

You just grunted in affirmation, curling in on yourself under the covers slightly.

There was a period of silence between the two of you that felt like it lasted forever. Finally, just when you felt like you were about to fall asleep at last, Gilbert mumbled, "Oh yeah, (name), I forgot to tell you something…"

"Ngh…what…?" You grumbled, squeezing your eyes shut tighter in irritation. Why couldn't he just let you sleep? HE was the reason you had been staying up all night, making sure he was all right and everything. You deserved to sleep, dammit!

"About Prussia…my homeland…" There was a pause, his voice filled with a melancholy gloominess. "It…doesn't exist anymore. After World War II…it was dissolved."

"…how in the hell does it make it your homeland when it hasn't existed for over sixty years?" You muttered with frustrated impatience.

Gilbert laughed nervously. "…because I was born before it fell?"

...well.

…that certainly had not been expected.

But if what Gilbert just said is true, then…then I'm…

"OH MY GOD I'M IN BED WITH A PEDOPHILIC WOLF GET THE FUCK OUT NOW GILBERT OR ELSE I WILL CASTRATE YOU WITH A RUBBER CHICKEN!!!"

"OW! GOTTVERDAMMT, STOP HITTING ME WHEN I—WHERE IN THE HELL HAVE YOU BEEN KEEPING THAT FRYING PAN?!"

"GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT GET OOOOOUUUUT!!!"

Needless to say, it was going to be another long night.
